Empathy and Civility

On social media, I maintain civil relationships with people across a wide socio-political spectrum. Let me tell you. It isn't easy. The only way is empathy. And, if you can't find empathy for a fellow human being, let me ask you to examine yourself.

Does empathy mean that I AGREE with all my friends? OF COURSE NOT! Empathy means that I do MY best to understand where they are coming from. It means that when I must question them, I do so with respect - without sarcasm and without bombast. It means that if I must disagree publicly, I do so with humility.

Perfectionists need not apply! By that I mean that I don't claim to be perfect at empathy and respect. And, I don't judge my friends for imperfections either.
